Hong Kong Vacations  One of the most striking characteristics of Hong Kong is an interweaving of seeming contradictions and the interplay of the exotic and the technically advanced. There are as many skyscrapers here as you're likely to see anywhere, but they're built with bamboo scaffolding. Historic trams rumble through Central, while below ground is one of the most efficient subways in the world, complete with the world's first "contactless" tickets, cards that are waved over a scanner. The city has what are arguably some of the best and most sophisticated restaurants in the world, but it also has dai pai dong, street-side food stalls. Hong Kong is home to one of the world's largest shopping malls, but there are also lively street markets virtually everywhere.

Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since July 1, 1997, has a high degree of autonomy, except in the areas of defense and foreign policy, and retains its own currency, laws, and border controls. It is composed of three geographic areas: the New Territories , Kowloon Peninsula , and Hong Kong Island . Hong Kong SAR is cosmopolitan and highly developed. Tourist facilities and services are widely available.  Visitors to Hong Kong should be aware that the importation into the United States of counterfeit, brand-name items, such as watches, compact discs, computer software, and clothing, is prohibited by U.S. law. U.S. Customs officials encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples, and/or goods for exhibitions and fair purposes.

CLOTHING

Hong Kong enjoys a generally subtropical climate. The weather in brief:

Spring - Jackets or sweaters are suggested.
Summer - Short sleeves, cotton clothing, and an umbrella are suggested.
Autumn - Short sleeves, sweaters and light jackets are suggested.
Winter - Suits, light woolens and sometimes overcoats suggested

Casual attire will suit in most cases, but coat and tie are normally required in first class western cuisine restaurants in the evening.

When the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule at midnight on June 30, 1997, the change of flag has only added to the uniqueness of this remarkable territory: no other land has changed sovereignty in such a manner before. And whatever the future holds, the territory's charm and almost hypnotic attraction will always remain.

Hong Kong had long been a trading centre linked with global activities, as an entry port and a meeting-place for the exchange of information, especially on the Pacific trade. The very earliest of the "hongs", the great British trading companies, developed Hong Kong as a nerve centre; and with the decline of Shanghai after the Second World War, Hong Kong became the window of China.

A proverbial melting pot where Chinese from many regions mix with people from every corner of the globe, Hong Kong is everything: new, familiar, exotic. Tall high-rise buildings are a backdrop for the traditional junks in the harbour. After dark, the city glitters with entertainment spots, restaurants, theatres and nightclubs.

A new side of Hong Kong presents itself in every corner. You will visit the most interesting sights of this fascinating and cosmopolitan island including: the Victoria Peak (1,300 feet above sea level) for a panoramic view of the city and outlying islands, the splendid beaches of the Repulse Bay Beach, the district of Aberdeen, famous for its floating restaurants and fishing village, where hundreds of people live aboard junks and sampans, and the Stanley Market with super shopping bargains.

Created 75 years ago in the glamorous 1920s, the legendary "Grande Dame of the Far East" continues to set hotel standards worldwide, offering a blend of the best of Eastern and Western hospitality in an atmosphere of unmatched classical grandeur and timeless elegance.

The Peninsula Hong Kong offers the ultimate in luxury accommodations with the most spacious hotel rooms and suites in Hong Kong. Each one of the hotel's opulent guest rooms is comfortable and stylish and equipped with advanced technology for the convenience of hotel guests - underlined, of course, by the world-famous Peninsula service.

The hotel's celebrated fleet of Rolls-Royce limousines, together with The Peninsula's helicopter shuttle service from the hotel's rooftop helipad, offer hotel guests luxurious transportation to and from Hong Kong International Airport and around Hong Kong.

The Peninsula Hong Kong is superbly placed overlooking Victoria Harbor in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon on Nathan Road, the shopping mecca of Kowloon, and in the heart of Kowloon's business and entertainment district.

One of Hong Kong's main attractions is shopping, and Nathan Road is one of Hong Kong's busiest shopping streets. Packed full of shops and boutiques selling every imaginable product from clothing to electronic goods, it is over two miles long. Harbor City, on Canton Road, is a huge shopping and entertainment center while Festival Walk is one of Hong Kong's newest shopping malls.

The famous outdoor market, Temple Street Night Market, is in Yau Ma Tei, and other markets unique to Hong Kong include the Bird Market and the Jade Market, all of which are easily accessible from The Peninsula Hong Kong.

The historic Star Ferry is just a short walk from the hotel, and a trip on the ferry across to Hong Kong Island is an essential experience as the views of Hong Kong from the harbor are stunning, especially at night. Another fantastic view of the city and harbor is from Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island, generally accepted as one of the most spectacular views in the world.

Three of Hong Kong's most important cultural attractions are close to The Peninsula Hong Kong: the Cultural Center, Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the Hong Kong Space Museum are well worth a visit.

Among the most spacious in Hong Kong, all rooms and suites in The Peninsula Hong Kong are furnished to the very highest standards of luxury, blending classical European elegance with subtle oriental influences. Rooms are designed not only for their comfort and style, but also for maximum convenience, including advanced technology.

Guests have a choice of rooms and suites in either the grand, historic Main Building or the more contemporary floors of The Peninsula Tower, with commanding views of the harbor and the city.

All rooms have air-conditioning, radio and TV, hair dryer, in-room safe and minibar.

The restaurants and bars at The Peninsula Hong Kong are among the most exclusive and most elegant in Hong Kong. Renowned as one of the best French restaurants in Asia, Gaddi's is Hong Kong's most elegant dining experience while Felix offers a sleek and stylish city rendezvous with stunning views across the harbor. High tea at The Peninsula's The Lobby is a Hong Kong institution, and the best authentic Cantonese food in town is served at Spring Moon.

The Peninsula Spa is one of Hong Kong's most luxurious hotel spa facilities, complete with a state-of-the-art Health Club, huge Roman-style swimming pool, and beauty and hairdressing salon.
